Jay-Z Agrees With Kanye West's VMA Outburst: 'You Cant Give Someone Video Of The Year That Didnt Win Best Female Video'

AceShowbz: Jay-Z defends fellow rapper Kanye West for storming the stage of 2009 MTV Video Music Awards and interrupting Taylor Swift's Best Female Video acceptance speech. In an interview featured in the February issue of Interview magazine, he said, "I like that, man! I really do. I mean, no one's walking around here perfect. Everyone's gonna make mistakes. That's part of how you learn. I think Kanye . . . Well, I know he said what he believed. He was telling the truth."
When asked which event he's referring to, Jay-Z explained, "I'm talking about the Taylor Swift thing." He added, "I just think the timing of what he did was wrong, and that, of course, overshadowed everything. He believed that 'Single Ladies' [by Beyonce Knowles] was a better video [and] I believed that. I think a lot of people believed that."
"You can't give someone Video of the Year if they don't win Best Female Video. I thought Best Female Video was something you won on the way to Video of the Year. But, hey, I guess it wasn't - and that's a whole other conversation about awards shows and artists."
On September 13, 2009, Kanye West became the newsmaker when he got up to the stage of Radio City Music Hall and jacked Taylor Swift's mic when she delivered her acceptance speech. "Yo Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'll let you finish, but Beyonce has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!" he told the crowd. Due to what he did, he has repeatedly apologized over the incident but still got negative publicity in the media.
After avoiding spotlight for awhile, Kanye recently announced his return. Starting by throwing a rant on a live concert and calling other artists "too scared to stand up for something," he blogged about starting making a new album saying, "We will follow in the footsteps of Maya Angelou, Gill Scott Herron and Nina Simone. Their work improved with time. They documented what was happening in culture. That is our responsibility as the modern day artists and poets, to accurately represent what is happening now."

Powerful Earthquake Just Adds To Endless Misery For Haiti Residents

NY Times: The earthquake that plunged Haiti into darkness is another blow to a nation that has seen more than its share of misery.
Endemic instability, murderous dictators, more than 30 coups and a seemingly endless series of hurricanes and other natural disasters have claimed countless souls over Haiti's tumultuous 206-year history, leaving it the Americas' poorest country and utterly dependent on foreign aid.
Add to that Tuesday's 7.0-magnitude quake, the strongest to hit what is now Haiti since 1770. Initial reports on its destruction are frightening.

The quake occurred along a fault line believed responsible for seven large quakes between 1618 and 1860, said Harley Benz of the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. According to historical records, the 1860 quake struck Port-au-Prince and may have produced a tsunami.
The largest recorded earthquake in modern times on the island of Hispaniola was an 8.1-magnitude temblor that produced a tsunami and killed 1,790 people in 1946. Centered in the Dominican Republic, it extended into Haiti, according to the USGS.
Haiti was born in 1804, after the world's first successful slave rebellion. French troops surrendered to forces led by Jean-Jacques Dessalines. But the country's leaders drove it into a paralyzing disorder from which it has yet to recover.

Political turmoil prompted U.S. Marines to occupy Haiti from 1915 to 1934. In 1937, some 18,000 Haitians were massacred along the Dominican border on the orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo.
In 1957, Francois ''Papa Doc'' Duvalier rose to power, launching a 29-year dynasty of terror. Tens of thousands were killed under Duvalier and his son, Jean-Claude ''Baby Doc'' Duvalier.
It wasn't until 1990 that Haiti had its first democratically elected president: Jean-Bertrand Aristide, a slum priest who inspired the overwhelmingly poor majority. But Aristide was overthrown in 1991, and Haitians took to the seas by the thousands in a desperate exodus to Florida.
President Bill Clinton sent 20,000 U.S. troops to Haiti in 1994 to restore Aristide, who was re-elected in 2000. Aristide's initial promise soon flickered: Accusations that his party rigged legislative elections, pocketed millions of dollars in foreign aid and sent gangsters to attack opponents produced a bloody rebellion that ousted him in 2004.
Two years ago, President Rene Preval implored the world to commit to long-term solutions for his nation, saying a ''paradigm of charity'' would not end cycles of poverty and disaster.
''Once this first wave of humanitarian compassion is exhausted, we will be left as always, truly alone, to face new catastrophes and see restarted, as if in a ritual, the same exercises of mobilization,'' Preval declared.
The same could be said today.

Mistress Of Shaquille O'Neal Files Harassment Lawsuit Against Him

L.A Times: LOS ANGELES -- Former Laker Shaquille O'Neal's ex-mistress announced Tuesday that she's suing the basketball star for harassment.
Vanessa Lopez, an Orlando-based model, claims she and O'Neal began their affair about five years ago. She says she was initially resistant because O'Neal was married, but he told her he had an "open relationship."
Things went south about four months ago, Lopez alleges, after she told O'Neal she thought she might be pregnant.
Lopez says she didn't like O'Neal's reaction, and told him to leave her alone. She claims the Cleveland Cavaliers center then began harassing her.
"I used to walk down the street not looking back over my shoulder," Lopez said at the press conference, with attorney Gloria Allred by her side. "Now, I fear that someone is after me. At home I'm constantly looking outside to see if there's a strange car parked."
"I want this to be over," Lopez said. "I want to feel safe again."
Lopez accused Orlando Magic star J.J. Redick of harassment following their breakup in 2007.
According to a police report filed in Florida, Lopez claimed she was being harassed by Redick's brother, David. The report says that while the cops were at Lopez's house taking a report, David called her and said he would leave her alone "when she leaves J.J. alone."
Lopez has also reportedly had problems with Denver Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Delonte West.
In 2006, West, then with the Boston Celtics, called security on Lopez, saying she wouldn't leave his Orlando hotel room.
Police were called to the room, and Lopez accused West of making unwanted sexual advances toward her, according to the police report.
West acknowledged that he had slept with Lopez in the past, but said he didn't hit on her that night.
Instead, West said Lopez made advances at him, but he rejected her because he had another woman coming over.
Police eventually removed Lopez from the hotel.
Lopez's problems with Kenyon Martin happened in 2007, when Martin's business manager called police, claiming Lopez charged hundreds of dollars on the basketball star's credit card without permission.
It's unclear if criminal charges were ever filed against Lopez in connection with that incident.
For his part, O'Neal has been linked to at least three mistresses, including 25-year-old Swedish model Dominica Westling and the fiancee of another NBA player.
O'Neal's wife, Shaunie, has filed for legal separation with intent to divorce. Their next hearing is set for March.
