Kanye West Considers Himself A Poet And Tells Fans Not To Be 'Brainwashed' In First Rant Of New Year
Rap-Up: Kanye West kicked off his new year with an all-caps blog entry. He thanked his fans for their support over the past six years and revealed that he’s back in the studio making music, vowing to perfect his craft.
“It’s funny how so many rappers get worse as their careers stretch out, but true poets get better,” he said, citing his latest inspirations. “We will follow in the footsteps of Maya Angelou, Gill Scott-Herron, and Nina Simone.”
Mr. West also cautioned his fans against allowing the “powers that be” to “brainwash” them into believing everything they read. “Let us look past headlines and deal with just a bit of reality in this new decade,” he advised.
'Avatar' No. 1 again, surpasses $1 billion at world box office
Thanks to astronomic word-of-mouth, inflated 3-D ticket prices, and consecutive holiday weekends that began on a Friday, "Avatar" continued its seemingly unstoppable climb to the Hallelujah Mountains of U.S. and global box office.
According to estimates from Hollywood.com Box Office, James Cameron's sci-fi opus grossed $68.3 million over New Years weekend, a tiny 10 percent drop from Christmas weekend for a $352.1 million domestic total -- easily the biggest third weekend in the U.S. ever (2002's "Spider-Man" had held the record with $45 million).
Much more impressively, in just 17 days, "Avatar" has surpassed $1 billion in the global box office. To put that in perspective, it took "The Dark Knight" pretty much its entire theatrical run just to make it to that milestone. (Another landmark: $66.4 million of "Avatar's" worldwide total is from IMAX theaters, a record for the mega-screen format.)
"Avatar" wasn't the only film to ring in the new year with serious box-office bounty, either. "Sherlock Holmes" sleuthed out an elementary $38.4 million for second place, a 41 percent drop for $140 million total.
Hot on its heels, "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" chirped to $36.6 million, dropping just 25 percent for $157 million total and third place. (So what will the inevitable third film be called? The Second Squeakquel? The Threakquel?)
"It's Complicated" fell a bite-sized 15 percent, cooking up $18.7 million for fourth place and $59.1 million total.
And in fifth place, "The Blind Side" actually improved upon its total last week, rising 8 percent for $12.7 million and $209.1 million total. (As EW noted yesterday, this means star Sandra Bullock is the only actress ever to have a film marketed on her star power alone pass $200 million in U.S. box office.)
In fact, with no major debuts to steal away fresh audiences, it was simply a fabulous weekend to be in movie theaters, period. "Up in the Air" pitched down an imperceptible 3 percent with $11.3 million and $45 million total.
"The Princess and the Frog" hopped up 11 percent with $10 million and $86 million total. Even certified turkey "Did You Hear About the Morgans?" was up 4 percent, bringing in $5.2 million for a (still woeful) $25.6 million total.
Overall, the top ten box office was up 70 percent from last year, when "Marley and Me" was barking its way into filmgoers' hearts.

With all the controversy surrounding the latest video from Jay-Z "On To The Next One" and its supposed blasphemous images. This is bound to make some people feel uncomfortable as well.
According to a story reported by HipHopWired. New Orleans rapper Lil Wayne will appear in an Adult Swim cartoon titled "Freaknik" as Jesus Christ
The name "Freaknik" is taken from a former annual event held in Atlanta for mostly African American college students from around the country.
Adult Swim is known for edgy cartoons generally geared for audiences 18 years of age and older. If the creators of "Freaknik" were looking to get a buzz then this should do it. The only question is, will it be a positive or negative buzz?
The cartoon which also features T-Pain and David Banner will air on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim March 1st.

Kim Kardashian Says She Isnt Paid To Advertise Via Twitter
Examiner: Kim Kardashian says Carl's Jr. did not pay her to tweet about their salads and the E! reality star posted a blog post to "clear up" the rumors.
"I want to clear this up because there has been a lot of talk about this. Carl's Jr did not pay me to tweet about their salads," Kardashian wrote her on her blog.
The Keeping Up with the Kardasihans star was said to be getting money in exchange for tweeting about products.
In an interview published by PRNewser.com with co-founder of company Ad.ly, he said Kardashian gets paid by his clients to online promote.
"Yes, obviously I was paid to be in the commercial... we all have to work! But I was not paid to tweet or talk about the salads on my blog, Facebook account, MySpace account or any other online outlets," she says.
Adding, "I want my fans to know what products, gadgets, foods, clothes and beauty products I like and I love sharing all that with my fans. You all know I've posted about certain clothes and products on my blog since I started blogging two years ago."
Four Year Old Boy Tragically Struck Down By Celebratory Bullet On New Year's Eve
AJC.Com: Four-year-old Marquel Peters loved church. So much so, that he cried recently when he thought he would miss it because a relative was running late.

For the New Year's Eve service, Marquel brought along a video game to play during an intermission.
The next time Marquel returns to his family's church, it will be for his funeral.
Thursday night, Marquel and about a dozen family members attended a service at the Church of God of Prophecy near Decatur.
Marquel was seated next to his mother, Nathalee, while those in the church waited for a 12:30 a.m. concert to begin. Then, those in the sanctuary heard a loud pop. It was almost like the sound of a balloon.
Instantly, Marquel was on the floor, and he was bleeding.
"No one knew what it was," said Garry Peters, Marquel's uncle. "It was just crazy."
When emergency officials arrived at the scene, Marquel was crying, Peters said. Still, there was no obvious indication of what had happened. There was no gaping hole in the sanctuary, and nothing fell from the ceiling.
Except for a bullet that struck the child in the head.
Marquel was transported by ambulance to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he later died.
An X-ray at the hospital confirmed that it was a bullet that struck Marquel, his uncle said. Doctors at the hospital had hoped to do surgery on the child, but it was too late.
About 350 people were gathered in the DeKalb County church on Covington Drive at the time of the incident, Senior Pastor Lloyd Phipps said.
Phipps said the church members paused to pray for the child, and then, believing that his injury was not life-threatening, they continued with a planned concert.
The pastor and the parishioners were still in the church when they learned of the child's death at about 3:30 a.m., Phipps said. He said during the concert the boy's family kept him updated on the child's condition, which he believed was improving.
Investigators returned to the church later Friday, where they discovered the point of entry for the bullet: in the roof of the church. Phipps said police believe someone fired a celebratory shot into the air, and it went through the roof on its way down.
"It's one of those things that you just cannot make any sense out of," Phipps said. "This lady took her kid to church, which is the right thing to do. And her son got killed because of someone’s irresponsible behavior."
On Friday, the shocked family returned to the church, where they joined other church members in mourning the loss of the little boy. A usually happy boy, Marquel had cried two weeks ago when he almost missed church because a family member was running late.
"He was just a good, smart kid," Garry Peters said.
Now the family plans to return to the church for Marquel's funeral. His death, Peters said, was senseless and could have been avoided.
“They can’t just get out there and shoot," Peters said. “What are you celebrating? You’re out there killing people.”
Police do not have any suspects at this time, said Officer Jason Gagnon with DeKalb County police.
"I'm a faith believer, but it's just hard" Peters said. "Why at church?"
